Petunias are vigorously, sprawling, semi hardy, showy annuals. The leaves are round in shape, soft, thick, sticky and small in size. The Flower has five attractively veined Petals joined together at the mouth to form a trumpet shape. The petals of a single flowers are irregularly shaped while in the double flowers they are modified stamens into patels. A cool weather is favourable for germination therefore delaying sowing of the nursery by few days till appropriate weather conditions. Once the seedling grows they are transplanted on site or bigger containers and the plant flowers in 90 to 100 days. Small and weak looking seedlings generally produce colourful blooms. The plant flourishes as the weather gets warm. It requires a well-drained rich soil with normal irrigation. Pinching is done to make the plant bushy. Plucking of faded flowers stretches the flowering period. To have a second bloom cut the longest stem1-2 inch above the ground after the first bloom and apply fertilizers or liquid manure. When the sepals are still green, light brown pods are collected between end-April to May. Buds are collected regularly and dried under shade. On drying the buds cracks after 3-4 days and the seeds come out. The plant is widely crossed and classified into various types. The appearance shows the wide diversification in many of its hybrid variety. Petunia has lot of varieties and it becomes difficult to identify and select. The hybrid varieties are more prevalent.

It is a showy plant which is most useful for hanging basket. Because of its long blooming period its flowers can be enjoyed till late season.

Care of Petunias

Care of petunias includes regular watering and as much sunlight as possible to promote multiple blooms. Spreading ground cover petunias are pickiest about water, weekly watering should be included in the care of petunias.

While petunias will grow in a partially shaded location, a fuller and more abundant bloom is produced in full sun. Soil prepared before planting petunias should have well-composted organic matter worked in.

Care of petunias will include regular fertilization with a balanced, water soluble fertilizer designed for blooming plants. As they are heavy feeders, petunias care will also include weekly feedings. Proper light, water and fertilization when caring for petunias will ensure a long season of beautiful blooms.

Proper petunia care involves removing spent blooms and the seeds they may produce. When deadheading the growing petunias, remove the base of the flower to include seed removal. Petunias allowed to go to seed will slow or stop blooming.
