The Alpinia Tricolor is a wonderful plant to grow either outdoors or indoors as a houseplant. It is a native plant in Brazilian rainforests. Being a member of the maranta plant family, the leaves fold up as if in prayer. The dark green leaves are variegated in shades of pink, red, white, or green. Outdoors, this plant can easily reach to 1.5m (5 feet). They produce reddish-pink flowers in spring.

These tropical plants are grown outside only in the warmest, most humid locations. They prefer filtered light and rich, evenly moist, organic soil with good drainage. A hint of dry air, very cool temperatures or drought can cause the leaves to drop or turn brown. Cool wet winter conditions favor the development of root and stem rot. As interior plants, these tropicals grow best in humidified rooms or on moist pebble trays. Allow their soil to dry slightly on the surface before watering again. Evenly moist, not wet, soil is best. Stromanthe is lovely grown outdoors as a tender perennial or in containers. It imparts a tropical look wherever it is planted.
