No one is quite sure where is comes from, but wild plants are reported from areas of UP and dry parts of Sri Lanka. A closely related shrub with smaller flowers is found on the Ridge.

Bark pale brown or greyish, not very rough

Spines simple or forked, up to 5 cm long

Leaves in opposite pairs, shiny; shiny; tapering at base, rounded at apex with a tiny sharp point; new leaves red

Flowers tubular, pure white or tinged pink, at ends of tiwgs; petals 5, pointy, overlapping to the right

Fruit a reddish-purple berry up to 2.5 cm long; pulp juicy, acid

Where to See it More common as a hedge (Shalimar Gardens, behind the Russian embassy); trees in fruit ordhards in N Delhi.
